MINNESOTA GOVERNOR TIM WALZ IS PROPOSING  ONE-POINT-SEVEN BILLION DOLLARS IN NEW TAXES  (MOSTLY ON WEALTHY MINNESOTANS AND LARGE CORPORATIONS) TO COVER A STATE BUDGET SHORTFALL.

REPUBLICAN REPRESENTATIVE JOHN BURKEL OF BADGER SAYS  “IMPOSING MASSIVE TAX HIKES ON MINNESOTA FAMILIES AND BUSINESSES IS NOT THE WAY TO SPEED ECONOMIC RECOVERY”.

BURKEL SAYS GOVERNMENT SHOULD TRIM IT’S BUDGET.

 

LIFECARE MEDICAL CENTER IN ROSEAU CONDUCTED  254 CORONAVIRUS TESTS LAST WEEK,

AFTER  MORE THAN  THREE HUNDRED TESTS THE PREVIOUS WEEK.

THE NUMBER OF CONFIRMED COVID CASES IN ROSEAU COUNTY HAS DROPPED DRAMATICALLY IN THE MONTH OF JANUARY.

 

THE MIDWEST FORAGE ASSOCIATION WILL HOLD IT’S ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM NEXT MONTH,  BUT IN A VIRTUAL FORMAT.

THAT SYMPOSIUM IS FEBRUARY 16TH AND  17TH.

 

CALVIN BENSON,  WHO DOES COMMUNITY OUTREACH FOR 7TH DISTRICT CONGRESSWOMAN  MICHELLE FISCHBACH,   MET WITH THE ROSEAU COUNTY BOARD LAST WEEK.

HE ALSO VISITED WITH CITY OF ROSEAU OFFICIALS, AND SAYS HE’S HEARING COMMON THEMES ACROSS THE 7TH DISTRICT.

CALVIN BENSON SAYS VIRTUALLY EVERY COUNTY IN NORTHWEST MINNESOTA IS FACING A SIGNIFICANT SHORTAGE OF WORKFORCE HOUSING.

 

TOMORROW AND FRIDAY ARE STAFF PREPARATION DAYS AT THE ROSEAU SCHOOL,

WITH A RETURN TO SCHOOL MONDAY FOR JUNIOR AND SENIOR HIGH STUDENTS;   WHO HAVE BEEN IN A HYBRID MODE,  ATTENDING SCHOOL  IN PERSON TWO DAYS A WEEK SINCE EARLY SEPTEMBER.

SUPERINTENDENT TOM JEROME SAYS ROSEAU HAS AVOIDED IN-SCHOOL TRANSMISSION OF COVID-19 FOR THE FIRST FIVE MONTHS OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.

 

THE NORTHWEST PRIVATE INDUSTRY COUNCIL,  AMONG OTHER THINGS,  PROVIDES WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS  IN THIS PART OF MINNESOTA.

AIMEE BERGER IS WITH THE LOCAL WORKFORCE BOARD, BERGER SAYS HER SERVICE CONNECTS JOBSEEKERS TO EMPLOYERS AND BUSINESSES IN THE AREA.

 

SOME MINNESOTA SENATE REPUBLICANS HAVE INTRODUCED A BILL REQUIRING IDENTIFICATION IN ORDER TO VOTE.

MICHELLE WITTY, WITH THE LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS OF MINNESOTA,  SAYS IT IS TROUBLING THAT SOME LAWMAKERS ARE STILL FLOATING RHETORIC ABOUT AN ALLEGED  “RIGGED”  PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.

 

A PUBLIC VISITATION FOR LEONA  RINKENBERGER OF WARROAD,  FOLLOWING COVID GUIDELINES,  IS FRIDAY EVENING  (5-7 PM)  WITH A SEVEN O’CLOCK PRAYER SERVICE AT ST MARY’S CATHOLIC CHURCH IN WARROAD.   PRIVATE  SERVICES WILL BE HELD AT A LATER TIME.

THE ROSEAU COUNTY BOARD,  YESTERDAY,  APPROVED THE PURCHASE OF THREE LOTS IN THE ROSEAU INDUSTRIAL PARK FROM THE CITY OF ROSEAU FOR A NEW COUNTY HIGHWAY SHOP.

THE PURCHASE HAD BEEN PREVIOUSLY APPROVED LAST NOVEMBER,  BUT LEGAL DESCRIPTIONS OF THE PROPERTY WERE REQUIRED.

 

THE MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF EMPLOYMENT AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IS RESEARCHING THE IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON STATE BUSINESSES.

THAT RESEARCH SHOWS THERE WAS A NET LOSS OF MORE THAN ELEVEN THOUSAND BUSINESSES IN THE STATE IN MARCH AND APRIL OF 2020;  ALTHOUGH THAT RESEARCH ALSO SUGGESTED MANY OF THOSE BUSINESSES WERE CLOSED TEMPORARILY DUE TO THE PANDEMIC.
